  18. <p>     "We are going to find the one man who is absolutely right
  19. for you," declares Helena Amram in ads touting her chain of
  20. matchmaking services. But the high-profile doyenne of dating has
  21. a date of her own--in New York State's Supreme Court, where
  22. Attorney General Robert Abrams filed a suit last week against
  23. several of Amram's firms. The accusation: her clients paid
  24. wildly inflated prices for nightmarish nights on the town.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Aggrieved customers tell of dates who were overaged,
  27. overweight, underemployed and sometimes already married. One
  28. woman recalled an escort who had "dyed bright-orange hair,"
  29. while another said she was matched with "a man who had a
  30. criminal record." For such bottom-drawer Romeos, Amram allegedly
  31. charged anywhere from $1,250 to $20,000, far in excess of New
  32. York's $250 price limit on social-referral services. Amram's
  33. response: "I never break the law." The attorney general's
  34. lawsuit seeks restitution of any overcharges and an end to
  35. Amram's matchmaking in New York.
